Automatic Learners with Feedback Queries

چکیده
Automatic classes are classes of languages for which a finite automaton can decide whether a given element is in a set given by its index. The present work studies the learnability of automatic families by automatic learners which, in each round, output a hypothesis and update a long term memory, depending on the input datum, via an automatic function, that is, via a function whose graph is recognised by a finite automaton. Many variants of automatic learners are investigated: where the long term memory is restricted to be the just prior hypothesis whenever this exists, cannot be of size larger than the size of the longest example or has to consist of a constant number of examples seen so far. Furthermore, learnability is also studied with respect to queries which reveal information about past data or past computation history; the number of queries per round is bounded by a constant. These models are generalisations of the model of feedback queries, given by Lange, Wiehagen and

The Comparative Effect of Direct and Indirect Corrective Feedback in Process-Based Vs. Product-Based Writing Instruction on EFL Learners` Writing Performance
This study attempted to systematically inspect the impact of direct and indirect corrective feedbacks on the writing ability of EFL learners when using product/process based instructions. To do so, 110 female EFL learners, between the ages of 15 and 18, were randomly assigned into four experimental groups to receive four different kinds of treatments, namely product-based instruction with direc...
متن کاملThe Integrative Effect of Direct Corrective Feedback and Metalinguistic Explanation on Learners' Accuracy in using English Articles
The present study was conducted to further improve the practice of written corrective feedback by integrating the two known feedback types (i.e. direct corrective feedback and metalinguistic explanation). With this aim, a sample of sixty-nine high-intermediate Iranian EFL learners was assigned into different feedback groups. While the first and second groups received direct and metalinguistic e...
متن کاملL2 Writing Feedback Preferences and Their Relationships with Entity vs. Incremental Mindsets of EFL Learners
The present study was aimed at investigating intermediate Iranian EFL learners’ feedback preferences on their L2 writing and examining the possible differences between learners with entity and incremental language mindsets with respect to their feedback preferences. To this end, 150 EFL learners were recruited from several language institutes in Isfahan, Iran, and their language proficiency lev...
متن کاملInvestigating Pitch Accent Recognition in Non-native Speech
Acquisition of prosody, in addition to vocabulary and grammar, is essential for language learners. However, it has received less attention in instruction. To enable automatic identification and feedback on learners’ prosodic errors, we investigate automatic pitch accent labeling for nonnative speech. We demonstrate that an acoustic-based context model can achieve accuracies over 79% on binary p...
متن کاملEffects of Metalinguistic Feedback on Grammatical Accuracy of Iranian Field (In)dependent L2 Learners’ Writing Ability
An increasing number of studies have investigated the effects of different types of corrective feedback. However, doubts have been raised whether field (in)dependent (FI/FD) L2 learners benefit differently from the explicit type of corrective feedback (i.e., metalinguistic). This study examined the (possible) effects of metalinguistic feedback on FI/FD intermediate L2 learners’ writing accuracy...
